Chart: How People Find Apps

Business Insider recently released a chart that illustrates how people find apps. Based on their findings, search is the top app discovery tool for both the Android Market and the App Store. Here’s the chart:

It’s easy to see that search is becoming an increasingly important tool; according to Nielsen, 63% of Android and iOS users have used search to discover new apps. But it’s also interesting to note that the next highest app discovery tool is “family or friends”.

Word of mouth recommendations have always been lauded as the best (and cheapest) marketing tools, and it seems that app downloaders take the opinions and experiences of their contacts seriously when it comes to picking what they download onto their smartphone or tablet.

What are your thoughts about these results? Has search or word of mouth been better when it comes to app discovery?
